Summer is closer than you think. Have you scheduled preventative maintenance for your central air conditioner? A new air conditioner not only keeps your home cool, but lowers humidity so you can stay comfortable through the sticky summer months. Scheduling air conditioning service helps the unit last longer and saves you money in the long run on utility bills. Continue reading to learn how HVAC maintenance helps you avoid expensive air conditioning repair. For more information, call your local HVAC technician.
Inspect the Filter Every Month
Over time, the air filter gets clogged with dust, dirt, pet hair, pollen, and other air contaminants. Once the air filter is clogged, the air conditioner has to work harder to produce the same amount of cool air. Not only does this make your air conditioner less energy efficient, but it can also increase how much you pay to cool your home this summer.
We recommend inspecting your air conditioner filter every month. If a significant amount of dust and other debris is caught in the filter, you’ll need to replace it with a new one. When buying your new air conditioner filter, make sure you get the right filter type with the right dimensions. Different types of air conditioning filters include fiberglass, pleated, and media.
Keep Outdoor Unit Clear
Now that the snow has melted, it’s a good time to check the outdoor component of your air conditioner. Dust, dirt, grass clippings, and leaves can insulate air conditioner coils, making it harder to release heat outdoors. Likewise, clogged air conditioner vents aren’t able to efficiently circulate air, which makes the unit work hard to produce the same amount of cool air.
We recommend getting in the habit of checking your outdoor AC unit whenever you’re in the backyard. This will especially be important in the autumn when the leaves start falling. Once you’re able to clear debris from the outdoor unit, it should be able to use less energy to keep your home cool. An energy efficient air conditioner saves you money in the long run.
Program Your Thermostat
A programmable thermostat can save you money by only turning on your AC when you need it. For example, there’s no reason why the air conditioning should be on full blast if the entire family is away on vacation. Likewise, you can program the AC to run less while everyone is gone to school or work.
If you set your thermostat too low, you run the risk of decreasing the lifespan of the unit from overuse. Some days (especially in early or late summer) it’ll make more sense to crack open a window than to turn on the AC. Use your best judgment and program your thermostat in a way that’ll save you money in the long run.
Keep in mind that once the weather cools, you’ll need to keep the indoor temperature at a minimum of 55 degrees to prevent frozen pipes. If you aren’t sure how to use your programmable thermostat, ask your HVAC technician during your next air conditioning service visit. Our HVAC contractors are always more than happy to answer your questions.
